ADINJC Insurance offer for SDIA members

ADINJC Insurance offer for SDIA members

ADINJC is now offering all its members the opportunity to purchase Professional Indemnity - Public Liability insurance at the very low price of £22.50. As a group member of ADINJC all SDIA members are automatically eligible for this offer. Thus, this is another SDIA benefit. If an SDIA member leaves the association they will no longer be eligible for the scheme. Therefore we would hope that you will help us to sell this product among your members.

I attach some information that may help in this and would be grateful if you could perhaps circulate this to your members. In addition, all information including the full policy document is on the ADINJC website. Enrolling is simple, members should call the Freephone number 0800 8202 446, with SDIA's PIN number and their payment details.

If there are any other queries please don’t hesitate to email secretary@adinjc.org.uk for direct contact with ADINJC. Click here for more information on Insurance from ADINJC

Update

Plans, plans, plans

Just a few of the topics under discussion at the moment ...
8 members have expressed interest in another Skid Pan course, we are considering a First Aid Course and summer BBQ, the Rainbow Centre has been selected as SDIA's adopted charity for the forthcoming year, a competition for a slogan for an SDIA poster will be discussed at the next meeting ... so there's lots going on behind the scenes. Further details will be published on here and on our Facebook page as they become available. Look out for emails and contact us if you have any suggestions or queries.

Jane has also found another local valet service that sounds interesting. It is a small business run by Jack Cottrell from Waterlooville. He comes highly recommended.

Safe Drive Stay Alive

Safe Drive Stay Alive

SDIA had a really interesting evening yesterday listening to Nicola from the Road Safety Partnership telling us all about the Safe Drive Stay Alive campaign. I'm sure we can help with their target of 600 attendees for each of the 4 sessions being held at Winchester Guildhall on 18 and 19 November, tying in nicely with Road Safety Week.

For further information click the link above.

Your SDIA committee will be in contact with the organisers so we can be as involved as possible and perhaps assist with transportation. Please spread the word and encourage your pupils to attend.
TCM notes from Lee

Lee TCM notes - August 2013

Thanks to Trish Grange for these notes....

Recently there have been several complaints from pupils saying they are failing because the examiners talked to them! We have been asked to advise our students if they would prefer the examiner did not talk to them to make their feelings known. No offence will be taken.

Examiners are finding that students are being asked to pull up at the side of the road and stopping too far out!

Finally - regarding change to check test next year. Kitty is going to see if she can get someone down from DSA to brief us on the changes.

So far very few people have expressed an interest in this event. We are unable to confirm the Hog Roast reservation until we have some idea of how many are interested. The price has been reduced to £5 per family (i.e. 2 adults with children). We are hoping this will encourage a good turnout. There will be events for the children. Thanks also to Mike Frisby for some valuable updates on the National Standards documents and the new Standards Check being introduced next year. Test Fees

WARNING - ensure Driving Test Fees are only paid through the official DSA site

For many years, there has been a problem for students who have booked their tests through freelance web sites charging an unnecessary administration fee for their services. Recently, some of these companies have subsequently cancelled these tests, claiming back the fee and pocketing all the fees. Test Centre Managers are warning that they have had candidates presenting for test when their test has been cancelled. This is a new development. Please direct your students to the links on our links page to ensure they are not caught out by this practise.

iPad Users Exchange

iPad Users Exchange - 2nd Meeting - 13th February

About 16 members attended this meeting to discuss the use of iPads and the iPad Apps they find most useful. Thanks to Phil Hutton for planning the evening and everyone who shared their favourite apps. Although not specifically an iPad App, Ian Wilkie shared his knowledge of Theory Test Pro which runs over the internet. (Personally, I'd considered buying it before but I'll definitely be looking at getting a free 2 week trial now ... just need to decide when to start. Caroline)

Other theory Apps included Road Signs Lite and iTheory UK. DSA's own Theory App is also used by several ADIs in our group.

Jane talked us through how she uses Neil Beaver's Records App. She's definitely converted having found workrounds that allow all her pupil records to be held in one place.

Dermot favours Driving Instructor UK but admits it does take a lot of work to set it up.

Neil Beaver's Routes App and its usefulness for recording routes taken during lessons was discussed.

Various other Apps were discussed but the top Favourite Apps from the group were:
    Road Board
    Records
    Manoeuvres
    Jot!
    Driving the Manoeuvres
    Dropbox
    Box
Overall it was a really interesting evening with lots of interaction. Thanks everyone for your contributions to its success.

Fund Raising for Brake

Our Chairman, Colin, is running The Great South Run on 28th October to raise money for SDIAs contribution to BRAKE. Last year we were able to make a generous contribution to BRAKE through various fund raising activities. It would be nice to raise a similar sum again this year, or maybe a bit more, to help BRAKE continue their work in increasing public awareness of road safety issues.

So please support Colin at his Just Giving page, or catch up with him at the CPD meeting on 16th August.

Message from Stephen Haley (Mind Driving author):
Your groups might be interested in my latest article - continuing the theme on young drivers, and now about their peer passengers. Draft reviews were excellent and very encouraging. See what you think. Please use and forward as you wish, wherever it might help or be of interest to your contacts:

Smart Parking

Smart Parking?

These pictures were taken by an SDIA member in Fareham. Quote: "I took them to Fareham Police station and showed them to the desk sergeant where I was told that they couldn't do anything about it as ... "The car was not causing and obstruction!" The PCSO for the area also agreed but would take a walk to look for herself."

So next time your pupils do a turn in the road and bump the kerb and get a serious ... show the examiner this ... happy days! More photos ...
Taught-us road safety

Harrison School "Taught-us" road safety project

The Junior Road Safety Officers and their committee took their school road safety logo (the Taught-us) and used it to promote the use of child seats in their parents' cars as they felt some parents didn't know when to stop using the car booster seats. The sign was kindly donated by SDIA and the artwork and making of the sign was by "Top Notch" signs in Gosport, they didn't charge us for the artwork just the sign making for which we are extremely grateful.

Mead End

17th May 2012 AGM

Mead End pub and skittle alley was the location for this year's AGM that was attended by 27 members. Official proceedings were kept to a minimum - details of the AGM can be found here.

Jane outlined the rules for a "killer" skittles tournament and everyone mingled between bowling balls at Nigel - what more could you ask for?! Colin Smith & Caroline kept score while others heckled. The final 3 competitors had a play off to determine who would take first, second and third prizes. Results were as follows:
First: Andy Bott winning a flight in a private aircraft!!
Second: John Moore (Book by Diane Hall "L of a way to Pass")
    Third: Caroline Cousins (Mug)
Thanks to everyone for making this a successful evening.
Harrison Junior School

May 2012
Harrison Junior School - Harrison Taught - Us Road Safety

Harrison Junior School in Fareham actively promote road safety for their pupils.

The children wanted a chart so they could measure whether their parents should still have them in a booster seat. The complete chart can be viewed here; it will be aluminium and displayed in the playground. The completed chart is being sponsored jointly by Top Notch Signs and SDIA; both will be advertised on it.

The sign was designed by a child at the school as part of a recent competition.
Mind Driving

Feedback from CPD Event: Mind Driving by Stephen Haley

Please pass on my thanks to all responsible for the meeting on Thurs. It must have caused a few headaches with the late change of venue. I bought a copy of Mind Driving when it was first published and found it extremely interesting. After Thurs I dug it out to read again. A most worthwhile evening. Thank you once again. Best wishes Richard Rawson

Just wanted to say thanks to the committee for organising the Mind Driving event last week. So useful I don't know where to start. Dave Buckney

I read the book a couple of years ago so it was a great refresher and been using "threatened space" ever since, and everyone really understands it. Jane Holt

I would like to add Thanks from the members of ASDI. Informative and thought provoking forum... Steve Pearce

Great evening, I just need to find the time to read the book!!! Laura Baker

Can't wait to see some of you on a Mind Driving workshop.... I'll be first on the list. Richard Chapman

Yes, Steve is very good, we are thinking of getting him over to our East Sussex group to give a talk, also mind driving workshop? Sounds interesting. Sue Haynes Blinco
